Hahn and Vaughn Lead Blue Jays to Sweep Over Spalding

Westminster Softball improved its overall record to 11-9, 4-0 in conference, on Sunday with a doubleheader sweep over Spalding.

The first game was close for a while, with the Blue Jays up 1-0 through 5 innings after an Aubrie Vaughn RBI single in the 2nd. That was just the beginning for a big day for the Westminster catcher.

In the top of the 6th, Vaughn broke the game open with a grand slam, putting the Blue Jays up 5-1. It would prove to be plenty of offense for pitcher Alyson Hahn, who threw a complete game and struck out 12 while only conceaving 2 runs on 3 hits.

The victory for Hahn now puts her at #1 in Westminster history for most wins in a career (32).

The second game was very similar to the first: close at first, but put out of reach by a 6th inning offensive outburst.

Going into the 6th, it was tied 1-1 with the Blue Jays lone run coming from Vaughn's second homer of the day in the 4th inning. In the 6th, the Blue Jays sent 14 batters to the plate and put up a whopping 11 runs. Vaughn added 2 more hits and 3 RBI's in the inning, while Callie Collier knotched 3 RBI's with a double.

After the 11 run top-half of the inning, pitcher Katie Price shut the door on the Golden Eagles in the bottom half, ending the game via the run rule. Price is now 5-2 on the season.

Following the victories, Coach Joe Henderson said he was "very proud of the total team effort where all contributed" and that it was "great to start conference play 4-0 vs a great Spalding team."

The Blue Jays are back at it again Tuesday with a home doubleheader against Mo. Baptist at 3pm.
