St. Louis, MO-9/28/2022- The Westminster volleyball team headed to St. Louis to take on the Fontbonne University Griffins in a SLIAC showdown. Things were bleak early for the Blue Jay fans in attendance as the Griffins won the first two sets (22-25 and 23-25). The Blue Jays were down 8-3 in the third set, and it was looking like it was going to be a sweep by Fontbonne. Westminster wanted none of that and battled back to win the set 25-20. They would win the fourth set 25-23 after holding off the Griffins who made a late rally after being down 20-16 earlier in the set. The Blue Jays would complete the comeback, winning the fifth set 15-10 to take the match.
Eryka Wanyonyi (Columbia, Mo. / Hickman) had a big night, she would put down a game-high twenty-one kills and pick up nineteens digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Malena Bixby (New Berlin, IL / New Berlin) had fifteen kills and four block assists. Haley Menke (O'Fallon, Mo. / Fort Zumwalt West) rounded out the balanced attack with eleven kills of her own. Kate Rable (Saint Peters, Mo. / Fort Zumwalt South) had thirty-five assists and Caitlyn Wheadon (St.Charles, MO / Francis Howell North) picked up sixteen assists on the night. The Blue Jays were all over the place with five different players getting ten or more digs and fifteen team blocks in the match. The Jays would also have ten aces in the match with Gracie Henrikson (Athens, IL / Athens) and Wanyonyi both having three each.
The Blue Jays will be back in action this Saturday, October 1st when they travel to Elsah, Illinois to take on Principia College and Webster University in a tri-match.
