Naperville, IL, 12/11/21 – The Westminster College men's wrestling team took to the mats in the North Central College Invitational in the Chicago suburbs on Saturday. The Blue Jays would travel with J.T. Roberts in the 141-pound weight class, Jackson Beene in the 157-pound weight class, Quenton Reickard in the 165-pound weight class, Chris Corley in the 184-pound weight class and Montgomery Mills in the 197-pound weight class. Those five warriors would lead the Blue Jays to a 13th place finish in the tournament.
J.T. Roberts got the Blue Jays started in the 141-pound bracket. He would face Zach Lemp from Harper College. Lemp would edge Roberts by decision 12-7. That would send Roberts to wrestle backs. On that side of the bracket he would face Aedon Oberdorfer from Augsburg University. Roberts would pin Oberdorfer at the 1:04 mark of the match. Roberts would next face Kameron Hanel from Augustana College. Roberts would win again by pinning his opponent 1:14 into the match to advance. He would now face Daniel Uribe from Wabash College. In Roberts fourth match of the day Uribe was too much and Roberts was bested by technical fall 20-4. The loss ended Roberts day at 2-2 in the tournament.
Beene would face off against Jiovanni Martinez from Aurora Universityin his opening match. Beene would pin Martinez 1:12 into the match to advance in the championship side of the 157-pound bracket. In the round of 16 he would face Shane Piper from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Piper would prevail by major decision 15-3 sending Beene to wrestle backs. His first match on that side of the bracket would be Ote Allsup of Aurora Universty. Allsup would prevail by fall at the 2:31 mark of the match. The loss would end Beene's day at 1-2 in the tournament.
Reickard would be the next man up in the 165-pound bracket. He would square off against Max Sokolski from Augsburg University. Reickard would be beaten by Sokolski by fall 3:00 into the match. The loss sent Reickard to wrestle backs where he would face off against Eduardo Ortiz from Aurora University. Ortiz would win by pinning Reickard at the 2:34 mark of the match. The loss ended Reickards day at 0-2 for the tournament.
Corley would compete in the 165-pound bracket taking on Noah Ross from Harper College. Ross would prevail by fall at the 1:52 mark of the match. The loss would send Corley to the wrestle back portion of the bracket. He would face Devontay Moore from Manchester College. Corley would battle but eventually lose by decision 8-3. The loss would end Corley's day at 0-2 in the tournament.
Junior Montgomery Mills would be the Blue Jays final competitor facing off in the 197-pound bracket. He would face Marcus Orlandoni from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Mills would prevail over Orlandoni by decision 8-6 to advance to the championship quarterfinals. He would square off against Demarco Lee from Harper College for a berth in the semifinals. Mills would compete hard but would be defeated by major decision 14-6 to fall into wrestle backs. He would take on Nicholas Casad from Wabash College. Casad would prevail over Mills by major decision 14-4. The loss ended Mills day at 1-2.
The Blue Jay men's wrestling team now heads to the holiday break. They will return to training after the break and will next see action in the NWCA DIII National Duals in Louisville, KY on Thursday January 6th.
